Comic reviews: 'Hulk' still smashes, 'Final Crisis' still confuses and 'Buffy' still slays

I'm looking at every other week for comic reviews so I can focus more on noteworthy releases and/or titles I don't usually cover. So unless "Amazing Spider-Man" stops sucking or "Daredevil" and "Captain America" stop bringing the awesome, I'll try to stick with event/milestone books and/or titles I just so strongly feel you should read or avoid. Onward.

Red Hulk popping the Watcher in the puss is but a juicy appetizer for the tasty main slugfest that is Hulk v. Red Hulk. Jeph Loeb cooks up a gonzo feast with a Red Hulk so wicked cool it hurts. (Just ask Uatu.) Such a wild ride of a tale deserves an apt artist and Ed McGuinness more than meets the challenge with perhaps the work of his career. Bold, brash, loud, smashing. Grab it.

Rick's sick and Carl's something that doesn't rhyme with Carl, which means he's come to terms with a so-called life with dad and the undead. (Blowing out zombie brains does that to a kid.) This ish reads like another intimate "Walking Dead" issue with no major reveal or turning point for the big 5-0. I expected/hoped for something more from Robert Kirkman (especially with what he did in "Invincible" No. 50) but at least Charlie Adlard's art in this ish especially resonates.

Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi together on a book isn't exactly my idea of chocolate and peanut butter, but this new "Astonishing" team shows promise. If Ellis can bring his "Thunderbolts" treatment to "Astonishing" — namely turn the team dynamic on its head with extreme edge and interpersonal crazy — we should be in for a quality followup to Whedon and Cassaday. I just worry about the muddled beauty of Bianchi's pencils. Bianchi's art works with the new tone for the book but it's hard to read at times, much like it was during his "Wolverine" run. Still, the new "Astonishing" is worth a look-see.

He was 37.

The best way to describe Turner's body of work would be an emphasis on the body — a Jim Lee drawing style, only brighter and sexier.

Turner made a name for himself with "Witchblade" and later "Fathom" pretty much for penciling some of the sultriest heroines in modern comics. Still, he never quite crossed the line of abject objectification. From pouty lips to chiseled abs, Turner portrayed female and male characters alike — slim, detailed and sexy but always with an undercurrent of joie de vivre.

The guy wasn't all about the scantily-clad hard bodies either. Turner's cover work for DC's "Identity Crisis" and Marvel's "Civil War" showed he could make any costumed character look absolutely cool.
Seems Sienna Miller brought less to her role as the Baroness (pictured) for "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" than director Stephen Sommers wanted. According to this report, Miller was given "these things that looked like chicken fillets" to give her bosom that extra something Sommers wanted for the bespectacled villainess.
